PV Varsity Highlights 2022-2023

PV at Slidell (Jan. 3)

Varsity Girls

Prairie Valley (2-1) 14
Slidell (3-0) 61

This game was all Slidell from start to finish. They are a really talented team, but we don't feel like we played well, and I didn't do a good enough job of preparing our team for this game. The Lady Bulldogs had a hard time scoring, and never were able to get into a rhythm offensively. I'm proud of the girls for playing hard the whole way, but we didn't play well enough. They beat us from the jump to the buzzer. But we'll use this as a learning experience and we're not dwelling on it, we're moving forward and getting ready for the rest of the season.

Makaylee Gomez 7 points
Carmen Gomez 3 points

Varsity Boys

Prairie Valley (1-1)
Slidell (2-0)

The Bulldogs started strong, getting to the basket early on for two quick buckets, and we were forcing some stops on defense. But Slidell made a couple of quick adjustments and things got out of hand pretty quickly when they hit 4 threes toward the end of the first quarter. We didn't play well offensively, and didn't do a good enough job of sticking with the game plan so that's on me. Their speed and size gave us a lot of problems to begin with, but it was the 3 point shooting that really hurt us. Slidell made 10 3s throughout the whole game. Going forward, we have to take better care of the ball, and continue to focus on being aggressive when we drive to the basket.

PV vs. Midway (Jan. 6)

Varsity Girls

Prairie Valley 27
Midway 36

The Lady Bulldogs let Midway get off to a fast start unfortunately, they made 3 threes in the first quarter and we got behind 9-15 after one. Prairie Valley battled back in the next two periods to cut the deficit to 2, going into the fourth quarter (it was 25-27). We couldn't quite get the job done in the fourth quarter and were able to only score one basket, while they made several trips to the free throw line to extend the lead. I'm proud of our defensive effort, we just did not have a great night shooting the basketball. Free throws also really hurt us. We only attempted 3 free throws the whole night, and Midway shot 16. So we need to watch our fouls, and also play more aggressively on offense.

Karagan Ritchie 12 points 6 rebounds
Sara Horton 8 points 10 rebounds
Makaylee Gomez 5 points 4 steals
Linzie Priddy 2 points 4 rebounds
Carmen Gomez 10 rebounds 5 assists

Varsity Boys

Prairie Valley 24
Midway 51

The Bulldogs played a pretty good game defensively, executing our game plan to try and slow Midway down. Unfortunately, in the 3rd quarter they made 5 threes and that kind of broke they game open. They scored 21 points in that quarter and we only scored 7. Offensively, we just didn't generate nearly enough quality shots, so it was all Midway for most of the game. We had some open looks that we just didn't knock down, and against these ranked teams, we have to be able to score the ball at a higher rate, with more efficiency. When only 3 players score, it's going to be hard for us to win.

Results from the Electra Tournament (Dec. 29-30)

Newcastle 50

Prairie Valley 35
Petrolia 29

Prairie Valley 46
Woodson 35

Prairie Valley 30
Electra 52

The Bulldogs were without some key players this past week, but it was a great opportunity for some other guys to step into a more prominent role, and gain some confidence. I think it was a successful week in that regard. We shot pretty well from 3, which we haven't done much this year. Defensively, we struggled at keeping the offense away from the basket, so we tried to focus on playing with urgency on that end of the floor. The main thing, is we were able to knock off some of that rust from not playing or practicing for the past week, so we should be ready to go for the rest of district play. We also had Tyson Easterling and Trae Campbell selected as all-tournament players.

Prairie Valley 36
Benjamin 66

Prairie Valley 42
Electra 39

The Lady Bulldogs played well for most of our three games last week. We just had one stretch there where we played without any energy at the start of the game against Benjamin. We were aggressive, and we got contributions from all seven of our players on offense and defense. We were able to beat Electra, after they had beaten us pretty badly the previous season so that was good for our team to see that growth. Obviously, the same as our guys, the main goal this week was to work off some of that rust which we were able to do. Carmen Gomez was selected as all-tournament.

Forestburg 21

Makaylee Gomez 20 points
Carmen Gomez 13 points
Linzie Priddy 11 points
Sara Horton 4 points
Karagan Ritchie 2 points

Lady Bulldogs were able to open district play with a win against Forestburg. The first quarter was a close battle, but thanks to baskets scored by Makaylee and Carmen Gomez, the Lady Bulldogs were able to take an 11-7 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. In the second quarter the Lady Bulldogs tightened up the defense and built a lead with 16 points on offense, while holding the Lady Longhorns to 2 points. In the second half, Prairie Valley was able to hold onto the lead and gain the first win of the district season. I'm proud of our defensive efforts.

Petrolia 49

Tyler Winkler 20 points
Eli Croxton 11 points
Tyson Easterling 6 points
Dakota Fore 6 points
Trae Campbell 3 points

The Bulldogs were unable to secure a close victory in a rematch with Petrolia. The game was a tale of two halves. The first half was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to score. The score at half was 17-17. The second half, both teams started scoring the basketball, and both teams got in foul trouble. Petrolia built a double digit lead going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Bulldogs made a comeback but weren't able to seal the deal finally losing by 3 points. I was proud of our fight, and not giving up because of adversity. But defensively we have to be better. Offensively, we need to be more efficient.

November 22

Varisty Boys
Prairie Valley 64
Christ Academy 50

The Bulldogs played well from the get go, and were able to get out to an early 25-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Thankfully we were able to maintain that lead despite not defending well in the second half. We had contributions from a lot of different players on offense. We didn't shoot the ball that well, but were able to get plenty of second chances with 17 offensive rebounds.

Tyler Winkler 27 points (5 3s) 7 assists 8 rebounds 7 steals
Eli Croxton 12 points 4 rebounds
Tyson Easterling 11 points 7 rebounds
Dakota Fore 7 points 10 rebounds
Dale Neugebauer 2 points
Jarrett Horton 3 points
Trae Campbell 2 points

Prairie Valley 67
Bryson 31

We jumped out to a good start right off the bat with some good pressure defense, but Bryson did a good job adjusting and it was just a 1 point game at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter we were able to build a little lead thanks to hitting 3 3s. We had a 10 point lead at halftime, but the guys really got dialed in on defense in the second half, and we only gave up 9 points in the second half. Great team effort, and we shot the ball pretty well. We still need to improve some of our shot selection and I think that will lead to us being more efficient. We did a good job of taking care of the ball, and forcing turnovers defensively. Our rebounding has also improved in the last couple of games, and that's been a big deal for us.

Tyler Winkler also scored his 1,000th career point in the game last night. We plan to honor that achievement at our next home game.

Tyler Winkler 36 points (6-6 free throws) 4 rebounds 5 steals
