Ways to Help your Child
Frequently parents ask how they can help their child. Here are a few suggestions for working at home.
1. Each night go over any graded papers that have been sent home and help your child correct any mistakes.
2. When your child is reading to you sit side by side, so that you can see the words as he reads. Please have him point to the words to make sure he does not skip any words. Even good readers sometimes get in a hurry and skip words if they don't point to the words.
3.After he has read a story ask him to retell the story in his own words. Also, ask a few questions to see how well he remembers the details of the story.
4. When practicing spelling words have your child look at each word, spell it aloud, and then write it. Then have him check to see if the word is correct.
5. Encourage your child to practice writing the math facts he is memorizing for timed tests. Sometimes using markers to write them makes this more enjoyable. After he has written them, go through the flashcards and find which ones he doesn't know quickly. Practice these extra times.
