Dear Parents,
I am excited about sharing the joy of learning with your child. In order to provide the students with excellent educational climate they deserve, I have established the following “Good Behaviors” chart in the classroom. We will incorporate this beginning Monday, August 23st. This will give students time to adjust to their new school environment. Each child is given a green, yellow, red and black card. Green is for good behavior. If students demonstrate inappropriate behavior, he/she will first be given a warning. If the inappropriate behavior continues, the student will be asked to change his/her color to yellow. Yellow is changed to red and red is changed to black.
Green – Good Behavior
Yellow – 1 conduct point & 5 minutes taken away from center time
Red – 2 conduct points & miss complete center time
Black – 2 conduct points & office visit
I will communicate your child’s behavior to you by placing a green, yellow, red or black stamp in the correct box on your child’s calendar, located in his/her folder. If your child is required to change his/her color, I will also communicate with you the reason for the color change.
Classroom rules:
1. Follow directions. It is important for students to listen and follow directions the first time they are given.
2. Respect others. Students need to treat others with kindness. Sharing and taking turns are important aspects of working together. This also includes respecting school property and the property of others.
3. Keep hands, feet and objects to self. By following this rule students can work and play safely.
4. Walk slowly and work quietly. Students should walk inside the school building. They should also talk quietly, so that they do not disturb others.
Lunch:
Students may bring their lunch or participate in the school lunch program. Lunches are $2.00 Milk only is $.40. You may pay daily, weekly, monthly.
Snacks:
Snacks are a very important part of the day for Kindergarten. Sometimes it takes that little extra boost to keep them active and participating. Snacks will be provided twice each day. Each week a student will be assigned to bring snacks for that week. The students week will be indicated on his/her calendar. Snacks may consist of a bag of animal cookies, a box of cereal, a box of cheese crackers, etc. Snacks do not have to be in large quantity or expensive. Please in no way feel you are obligated to bring snacks. Please indicate your decision below. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Throughout the year we will use food to as a part of our learning process. Sometimes it will be to study a new letter of the alphabet, a season, holiday, or theme. In doing so the safety of you child is of the utmost importance. Please list any food allergies your child has. All foods we eat will be in compliance with the Food of Minimal Value policy. These are foods high in sugar content. A list of these foods will be sent home when we send out the class party list.
Library:
Each week we will go to the school library. Students will be allowed to check out a book for their enjoyment. Books may be brought home for family reading. Books will need to be kept in backpack to avoid misplacing at home. If a student does not return their library book on Wednesday of each week, they will not be allowed to check out a new book for the next week. Books that are not returned at the end of the six weeks will be the responsibility of the parent to replace.
Homework:
Your child will have a Homework Calendar that will stay in their daily folder. Each evening you can pick an item to complete. Some of the items will take around 5 minutes to complete while others may take 15-20 minutes. You can have your child work on them at your own leisure. As your child completes an assignment have them color in that box on the calendar. This allows me to visually see how much is getting accomplished as I check folders each day. At the end of the month when your child completes the homework calendar they will get to choose a reward from the prize box.
Family Projects:
We will also have monthly projects for your child and family to complete together. Be on the lookout for the first project that will be due at the beginning of September. This will be a “This is Me” project. The directions will be sent home during the first week at school, with all the details and due date.
Homework Backpacks:
This year we are incorporating Homework Backpacks. These backpacks will be checked out by the students on Monday and will need to be returned on Friday each week. These backpacks will contain books and activities that follow along with our units and themes of study. Most of the year the kindergarten will also have a sight word list and a short reader each week. Since responsibility is part of our kindergarten learning process the following rules will apply to Homework Backpacks. We will follow a three strikes your out rule. Students who do not return their homework backpack on Friday, backpacks that are missing any pieces, backpacks with any items torn or destroyed, will receive a strike for each offense. After the three strikes that student will not be allowed to check out a backpack the rest of the year. A complete list of instructions will accompany each backpack, including a list of contents. We will begin Homework Backpacks during the second six weeks.
If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. Please discuss this with your child, and sign and return it. I am looking forward to a successful school year.
